William R. "Hamp" Hampton, age 82, Schoolhouse Road, Buckhorn died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He had been ill for the past four weeks. Early in life he lived in Bear Gap and later moved to Bloomsburg. He lived in Buckhorn since 1955. Hamp was born July 18, 1926 in Catawissa, the son of the late Earl and Lenna (Wheeler) Hampton. He was a 1944 graduate of the former Ralpho Township High School. A veteran of World War II he served with the U.S.
Army Air Corps. He was employed as a Spinner at the former Magee Carpet Co. for thirty years. He later worked for the former Berwick Forge and Fabricating until it closed. He was last employed in the Carpenter Shop at the former Bloomsburg State College, retiring in 1988. He attended the Buckhorn United Methodist Church. He was a sixty-one year member of American Legion Post #541, Catawissa. Hamp will be remembered for his love of carpentry, furniture building, restoring antiques and in his earlier years enjoyed hunting. He was an avid Penn State football fan. Survivors include his wife, Joan (Yodock) Hampton with whom he celebrated 57th wedding anniversary on September 23, 2008; two sons: William E. Hampton and his wife, Susan, Mechanicsburg, PA and Brian L. Hampton and his wife, Allison, South Riding, VA; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister: Mary Walburn and her husband, Kenneth, Bloomsburg; a niece; a grand niece and a grand nephew. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 A.M. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg with Rev. Ralph B. Hartenbach officiating. There will be combined VFW/Legion group providing military honors at the funeral home. Friends will be received Thursday at the funeral home from 6 to 8 P.M. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap.
