William C. Blewett, Sr., age 91, of Berwick and formerly of Lightstreet, passed away on Sunday evening, April 20, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of Columbia Montour Home Hospice.
Bill was born on Friday, February 16, 1923 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Clarence and Mildred (Atkinson) Blewett. Throughout his younger years, Bill attended and later graduated from the Dalton High School in 1940. He expanded his education and graduated from the two year program at the New York State University in Delhi, NY for two years before entering the armed forces.
On June 23, 1944, Bill enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country faithfully during World War II. During his time of service, Bill received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, and was also awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in battle. On October 12, 1945, Bill was honorably discharged from the 319th Infantry Regiment Company B for his time of dedicated service to his country.
After returning home from the war, Bill met and married his wife the former, Marilyn Keyes of Newark Valley, New York, on October 21, 1950. After making their home in Bloomsburg, Bill was employed by AGWAY Bloomsburg Division as the Installation and Service Manager for over 37 years until retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First English Baptist Church where he served as a former Deacon, Trustee and also served on many other boards and church committees.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Marilyn (Keyes) Blewett; a daughter: Cathy Cooper and husband, Gregory, of Danville; three sons: William C. Blewett, Jr. and wife, Cheryl, of Bloomsburg; Jon C. Blewett and wife, Terry, of Berwick; and Dennis D. Blewett and wife, Tina, of Bloomsburg; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Margaret Abbott of Peckville and Betsy Williams of Olyphant; and two brothers: David Blewett of Tunkhannock and Charles Blewett of New Jersey.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday morning, April 24 from 10 to 11 a.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will also begin on Thursday morning, April 24 at 11 a.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg with Rev. Dr. Lee Barnhardt of the First English Baptist Church, officiating. Graveside committal services with full military honors provided by a combined American Legion/VFW group will immediately follow in the New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Blewett family.
