Obituary

Wanda A. (Hilner) Hock, age 90, formerly of 94 Buckhorn Road, Bloomsburg, died Thursday, September 10, 2009, in the Carlisle Region Medical Center, Carlisle. Wanda lived on Buckhorn Road from 1951 until she moved in 2006 to Green Ridge Village in Newville, Cumberland County.
Mrs. Hock was born on December 31, 1918 in Anthony Township, Montour County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Adda (Harriman) Hilner. Following the death of her parents at the age of 4, she was raised by an aunt, Elizabeth (Hilner) Shoemaker.
She was a 1937 graduate of the Bloomsburg High School. Wanda was the longest standing member of the Christ Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Church Council, an Altar Guild member, and a member of the Church Choir. Since moving to Green Ridge Village, Wanda was faithfully ministered to by the pastoral staff of First Lutheran Church, Carlisle. In addition, Mrs. Hock was a member of the Buckhorn Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, served on the Election Board for North Hemlock Township, and worked at the Bloomsburg Fair Agricultural Building for many years.
Wanda is survived by her husband of 72 years, Larue C. "Shorty" Hock. They were joined in marriage on September 3, 1937. Also surviving are a son: Jered L. Hock and his wife, Elaine, of Carlisle; and two grandsons: Dr. Stephen G. B. Hock of Norfolk, VA and Joel M. B. Hock and his wife, Stacy, of Manhattan, NY; and a great grandson: Gideon M. Hock. .
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Wanda was preceded by a twin brother: William Hilner, and three sisters: Harriet Newman, Alois Rabuck, Irene Rider, and two additional brothers: Elwood Hilner and Lehman Hilner. She was also preceded by several cousins with whom she was raised as a sister: Fannie Moser, Lois Ikeler, Willy Shoemaker, Verna Carr, Harriet Gulliver, Freeda Mausteller, Mary Robbins and Frank Shoemaker.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 15, at 12 noon in St. Paul's (Straub's) Lutheran Cemetery, Frosty Valley Road, with Pastor Charles Brophy, First Lutheran Church of Carlisle, officiating. Family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 21 South Bedford St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
