V. Jay Dent, age 92, 589 W. Third Street, Bloomsburg, died Monday, February 15, 2010 at Bloomsburg Hospital. Jay had resided on W. Third Street for the past sixteen years, prior to that he resided at 144 Ridge Ave. for forty-four years. He had been in ill health for the past two years.
Jay was born September 7, 1917 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Franklin and Ada (Travelpiece) Dent. He was a 1936 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy. Until his retirement in 1984, Jay was employed by Girton Manufacturing, Millville, prior to that he had been employed as a Machine Shop Foreman at the former Magee Carpet Co. for over twenty-six years.
He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg, prior to that he was a sixty-three year member of St. Matthew Lutheran church where he had served as an usher, Asst. Scout Master for Troop 21, was the coach for the Championship Sunday School Basketball team and was men's prayer breakfast cook; was a member of Washington Lodge #623 F&AM, Caldwell Consistory, life member of the former Liberty Fire Co. and a member of the Bloomsburg Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of seventy years, Margaret "Peg" (Dotter) Dent; a daughter: Marilyn Kile, Bloomsburg, five grandchildren: Vivian Kile, Bloomsburg, Daniel Kile and his wife, Libby Bloomsburg, Ronald Kile and his wife, JoAnn, Wellsville, NY, Jessica Steinruck and her husband Richard, Walforf, MD and Donna Weaver and her husband Chris, Riverside; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Franklin Dent, Oklahoma City, OK and Frederick Dent and his wife, Jean, Elizabethtown and a sister: Doris Harter, Sunbury. Jay was preceded by a daughter, Patricia Miller in May, 1984. Funeral services will be Friday, February 19 at 11 a.m. from St. Luke Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Jeffrey G. Bohan officiating. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to time of service at the church.
