Sylvia P. Hartzell , age 98, of Bloomsburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at the home of Karen Hartzell, her niece and caregiver.
She was born on Saturday, June 3, 1922 at the home on Millville Road in which she lived her entire life until April, 2018. She was at Sunset Ridge Health Care Center from April to July. Sylvia was the last member of her family. She was the daughter of the late William R. and Anna (Long) Hartzell. Sylvia attended the Bloomsburg schools. Throughout her younger years she worked in the kitchen at The Bloomsburg Hospital and the Espy School kitchen. During World War II, she worked on the "Sewing Project" located in the basement of the Columbia County Courthouse, as a seamstress, making children's clothing. She was also employed at the R&G Silk Mill and the Columbia Silk Mill, retiring in 1985 after 37 years of employment.
Sylvia greatly enjoyed sitting on her front porch, reading, watching tv and listening to "old time" country music and hymns. She also loved the family reunions at the Bloomsburg Town Park. She was never one to complain and was always easy going and happy with what she had. Sylvia loved remembering the days when life was more simple and family meant so much. She helped her brother George raise his two children, Kathy and Larry. They were both grateful to have had her in their lives all these years.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was also preceded in death by
three sisters, Althea Bucher, Margaret Swisher, Elizabeth (Betty) Kessler, five brothers, William W. Hartzell, Sr., George E. Hartzell, Elmer Hartzell and two infant brothers who died at birth.
She is survived by eight nieces and four nephews. Sylvia requested there be no viewing.
Graveside services will be held at the Creveling Cemetery, Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg at 10:00 am on Saturday July 11, 2020 with Pastor John Erwine, officiating. The family wishes to thank the hospice workers, aids, nurses and the minister who cared for Sylvia.
