Shirley Joan Jones, age 87, of Bloomsburg, died on Thursday, July 4, 2019, a patient of the Emmanuel Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Danville. Shirley was a resident of her home in Bloomsburg for over 54 years.
She was born on Sunday, July 19, 1931 in Liberty, Nebraska, a daughter of the late Wilbert and Wilma (Wignall) Maine. Throughout her younger years, Shirley attended and later graduated from the Blue Springs High School, Nebraska in 1947.
On December 30, 1949, Shirley married her loving husband, William L. Jones. Shirley was a 54 year member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist where she was active in the Bundles of Blessings Ministry. She was also active with Bloomsburg area sewing group, book club and card club. For over 30 years she delivered Meals on Wheels. Joan was co founder, with her husband, Jones Center for Special Education Excellence.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded by a daughter, Trudi Jones, a son, Rodney Jones, and a sister, Mary Lee Schiermeyer.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 69 years, William L. Jones; six children: Julie Woll and husband, Patrick, of Danville, Jonathan Jones and wife, Kathy, of Bloomsburg, Mark Jones and wife, Sheila, of Bloomsburg, Timothy Jones and wife, Lisa, of Ellicott City, MD, Eric Jones of Bloomsburg and Jeff George and wife, Denise, of Perry Sound, Canada; 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a sister, Marilyn Schmidt Goosen and husband, William, of Beatrice, NE.
As a professional mother, Joan and her husband were noted for being parents to exchange students, foster children, college students and others needing a home.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 19, 2019 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Good Shepherd United Methodist, 101 East Fifth St., Bloomsburg.
Memorial Services will continue at 11:00 am with her pastor, Rev. Audrey Broscious, officiating. Private committal services will be in the New Rosemont Cemetery. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Streets, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Jones family.
