Robert C. Wright, age 83, of 145 Nottingham Road, Bloomsburg, died Thursday, February 11, in Balance Care where he resided for one year. Bob had been a resident of his Sherwood Village home for 36 years. He was born Wednesday, December 8, 1926 in Scott Twp. a son of the late Ralph W. and Maude Whampole Wright.
In 1944 Mr. Wright graduated from the former Scott High School. Following graduation he entered Duquesne University as an Aviation Cadet. Afterward he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps 509th Bomb Group, the group that developed atomic bombs which ended World War II.
Robert was a member of St. John Community Church, Catawissa and was employed for 37 years at TRW retiring as a supervisor in 1986.
As a life member of Valley of Bloomsburg Post #273, Bob served for seven years as Commander and for two years as District Commander. He was Sergeant at Arms for the American Legion State Headquarters, Wormleysburg, PA. He was a life member of Ft. McClure Post 804 VFW. In addition, Bob was a life member of the Bloomsburg and Espy Fire Companies, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the Lightstreet Fire Co. and a faithful member of TRW retirees. Also he was a life member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge #623. Bob served for two consecutive years as Chairman of the Legion College at Fort Indiantown Gap.
Hobbies that Bob greatly enjoyed were working on vehicles and motorcycles, hunting, and calling Bingo at several Fire Halls and American Legion Post #273.
Bob's survivors include his wife Dawn (Leighow) Wright with whom he would have celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary on March 9, 2010. Also surviving are two daughters: Gayle Martin and husband, Richard, of Harrisburg and Sheri Hoover and husband, Douglas, of Luzerne; three grandchildren: Ashley D. Martin, Damien R. Dietterick and Shannon D. Dietterick. He was the last member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by a brother: Ernest Wright in 1999 and a sister: Helen Wright in 1945.
Friends will be received on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St. Funeral services with military honors will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with his pastor, Rev. Charles Swank, officiating. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.
