Ralph J. "Doc" Barnes, age 88, of Catawissa, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Monday morning, March 27, 2023, at his Franklin Twp. home under the care of Compassus Hospice. Ralph was a resident of Catawissa all of his life.
He was born on Thursday, June 14, 1934 in Catawissa, a son of the late Lewis and Anna (Stefanski) Barnes. Ralph graduated from the Catawissa High School in 1952 and attended Penn State University for two years. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1958. Ralph was employed by Bloomsburg University as an electrician until his retirement in the 1990's. He was a member of the Elysburg Masonic Lodge #349 F&AM, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg, Order of The Eastern Star, Bloomsburg, the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge # 436 and the Catawissa VFW Post # 8306. He earned a Certificate of Service-Armed Forces Veterans of Foreign Wars, Anointed King of PA, Commanders of Knights Templar, and Grand Lodge of PA - 50 year service. In his younger years he enjoyed dancing, playing guitar and watching his Philadelphia Phillies. He also loved spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was also preceded in death by five brothers, Charles Barnes, Raymond Barnes, Harry Barnes, Lewis Barnes, Thomas Barnes, and six sisters, Rita Barnes, Alice Barnes, Louella Kessler, Margaret Girton, Jean Steward, and Nancy Long.
Survivors include his two siblings; a sister, Mary Kay Makowski and her husband Walter of Elysburg, a brother, Alvin Barnes and his wife Patricia of Camden, DE, two sister-in-laws, Deborah Barnes, and Jean Barnes, both of Catawissa, a brother-in-law, Ronald Long of Catawissa, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and his special friend, Sara Gallo of FL.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Masonic memorial services will begin on Monday, April 3, 2023 at 2:00 pm by the Elysburg Masonic Lodge #349 F&AM followed by Funeral Services with his niece, Lisa Barnes, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Mt. Carmel with military honors provided by the Catawissa VFW Post #8306. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Barnes family.
