Obituary

Placido Joseph Garcia, EdD, age 91 passed peacefully on January 25, 2022, after a lengthy illness. P. Joseph was born in Canton, Ohio in 1930 to Alejandro Garcia (Puebla de Alcocer, Spain) and Margarita Artes Manzano (Alhama de Almeria, Spain). He was the youngest of five children. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over fifty years, Margaret, two brothers: Alex Garcia and Amil Garcia, and two sisters, Rosalie Garcia and Iris Wilhelm.

P. Joseph attended Timken High School in Canton, Ohio and worked for Republic Steel prior to being drafted to serve in the Korean Conflict. He served honorably in the Army Signal Corps as a radio, television, and radar technician. Upon leaving the service, he embarked upon a career in education which led him to many destinations, including Ravenna, Ohio; Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Manhattan, Kansas; Las Vegas, New Mexico; Montgomery, West Virginia; and finally, to Bloomsburg University, where he spent the remainder of his career, retiring after spending over thirty years as a faculty member in the Physics Department.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University, a Master of Science from New Mexico Highlands University, and his Doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University.

P. Joseph loved music and enjoyed playing the violin and piano. His favorites included classical, ragtime, and jazz. He also pursued a lifelong love of all things electronic, frequently spending time in his workshop repairing televisions, video, and audio equipment. He was also a member of the Sigma Pi Sigma Fraternity, the Physics Honor Society and The Bloomsburg University College Community Orchestra.

He is survived by his son, John Garcia and wife Jane of Columbus, Ohio, two grandchildren, Abigail Garcia and Sarah Gunther, and one great grandson, Lukas Martin.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 31, 2022, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Streets, Bloomsburg.

Funeral Services will begin on Monday, January 31, 2022, at 10:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Greg Moore, officiating. Military honors will be presented by the combined V.F.W and American Legion Honor Guard. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Garcia family.
