Obituary

Patricia McCambridge Dowd

Born March 13, 192? (a Southern lady never tells), Patricia was the cherished Mother to Anne Elizabeth Dowd (Rand Whipple) of Bloomsburg, PA and John R. Dowd (Christie) of Phoenix, AZ. Beloved Grandmother to John R. Dowd II (Kate), Lauren E. Dowd, McCambridge Dowd-Whipple, Alex M. Dowd, and Walker Dowd-Whipple. She is survived by her sister, Minette Harris of North Hollywood, CA, her niece Cecile Maurer of Yorba Linda, CA and her cousin James E. Masterson of Jenkintown, PA.
Patricia was the first baby born in the Corinth, Mississippi hospital. A proud graduate of the Mississippi State College for Women, Patricia married Yankee Air Force Lieutenant Edwin Francis Dowd, crossed the Mason/Dixon line and found herself living in rural Massachusetts. From there she lived in Battle Creek, MI, Des Moines, IA, Joliet, IL and finally Bloomsburg, PA. Patricia took pleasure and pride in her 20+ years of work as Executive Assistant and Director of International Sales at Remin Kart-a-Bag in Joliet.
Patty was a world-class storyteller, a lover of dining out, art, poetry, Manhattans, beauty, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Newman. Blessed with a quick wit and a compassionate heart, she leaves, in addition to her family, a strong circle of devoted friends: Pat, Cindy, Laurie, Sandy, Gail, Anna, June, Rayvon and Louise, Vera, Sylvia, LuAn, Jill, Janet, Sharon, Gaylen, Melissa, Nancy and Charlie, Gerry, and Shelly. She also actively maintained cherished friendships over distance with Virginia Ann, Dale, Jeanie, Louise, Duane, Ruthie, and many others.
An independent and progressive thinker, Patty remained a Southern lady to the end (even her grandchildren knew that they needed to stand when Dixie was played). The family wishes to thank her special friends and caregivers, Renee, Tracey and Davina, whose kindnesses and patience eased long hours during her final year, and the outstanding compassion and expertise shared by her Columbia-Montour Hospice caregivers, particularly her nurse Karen, Jessica, and Dr. Rob Meloy. Thanks to their gentle and caring ministrations, she was able to end her days in her home. A lover of literature, donations in honor of her memory may be made to the Bloomsburg Public Library where she spent many happy hours, or to the Columbia Montour Home Health and Hospice. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The Dowd family is being assisted by the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth Streets in Bloomsburg. For those wishing, online condolences are available at Allen-FuneralHome.com
