Norman J. "Jake" Simmons, age 85, of Mainville, died on Sunday afternoon, May 26, 2013 a resident of Millville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Millville.
Norman was born on Wednesday, May 2, 1928 in Williamsport, a son of the late Rev. Norman J. and Margaret (Watson) Simmons. Throughout his younger years, Jake attended schools from many areas while relocating with family to different churches in the Ministerial. In 1946, Jake graduated from the Mifflinville High School. On October 4, 1946, Jake enlisted with the United States Army, and served his country faithfully during World War II in Japan with the 11th Airborne Division. During his time of service, Jake was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan, and the World War II Victory Medal. On March 6, 1948, Jake completed his time of service to this nation and was honorably discharged from the United States Army.
After returning from the war, Jake married his beloved life of 64 years on July 6, 1949 the former, Ruth H. Ebersole. For over 30 years, Jake was employed by TRW in Danville until his retirement in 1983. Although Jake officially retired, he always continued his love and passion of working on the family farm in Mainville raising Hereford and Charolais Cattle. He enjoyed being at home on the farm remodeling his home and taking care of all the responsibility of farming.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruth, are two sons: Dwight N. Simmons and wife, Janet, of Harrisburg, and Douglas J. Simmons of Broomfield, CO; a brother: Charles Simmons of Milton and two sisters: Jean Shelhamer and husband, Milford, of Mifflinville; and Eleanor Buzbee of Arkansas.
Jake was preceded in death by five siblings: James Simmons, as a toddler, Anne Slusser, Elva French, Chloe Mutchler, and Virginia Ritter.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 31 at 11 a.m. in the Elan Memorial Park Cemetery, Lime Ridge with family friend, Rev. William R. Hallman, officiating. A combined VFW/American Legion Group will provide full Military Honors. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street is assisting the Simmons family with arrangements.
