Myles Wilson Katerman, age 94, of Bloomsburg and Hilton Head, SC died on Monday, September 17, 2018, in Savannah, GA. Myles was a resident of Bloomsburg for over 88 years.
He was born on Tuesday, October 16, 1923 in Chathum, NJ, a son of the late Harry and Elsie (Barger) Katerman. Throughout his younger years, Myles attended the Bloomsburg area schools, and later graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1941. Myles expanded his education by attending Penn State University and later faithfully served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Infantry, he was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1943, Myles married his loving wife, the former Joanne H. Magee, who preceded him in death on December 22, 2013. Upon returning to Bloomsburg after WW II in 1946, he went to work at The Magee Carpet Company and retired in 1989 as Executive Vice President. Mr. Katerman was active with the Boy Scouts of America, he served on the Bloomsburg Hospital Board, was Past President of the Bloomsburg Chamber of Commerce and member of the Board Of Directors. He served on the Board of Directors of Camp Victory and was recently named Director Emeritus of the Nicholas Wolf Foundation Board, Inc. Myles helped organize Volunteers in Medicine in Columbia County and Hilton Head, SC. He was a lifetime member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg. He was also a member of the Bloomsburg Elks
Lodge #436, Bloomsburg American Legion, Post # 273, Bloomsburg Moose Lodge #27, Washington Lodge # 265, F&AM, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg, Irem Temple Shrine, Wilkes Barre and the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Myles was also preceded in death by his sister Betty Algatt.
Survivors include his three children, Christine Wheadon of Danville, Barbara J. wife of William Paule of Dauphin, PA, Harry "Mike" M. Katerman of Hilton Head, SC, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018, from 1:00 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 130 West Third St., Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will begin on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Mark F. Reisinger, officiating. Military honors will be presented by a combined American Legion and V.F.W. groups. Graveside committal services will be private at the convenience of the family in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market St., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Katerman family.
