Melvin W. Peifer, age 83, of 20 Windsor Road, Bloomsburg died Monday, January 18, at his home following an illness of several years. Melvin was a resident of his current home for 10 years and previously lived in Millville and New Jersey.
Melvin was born September 1, 1926 in Montgomery a son of the late James R. and Lydia Buss Peifer. He graduated in 1945 from the Montgomery High School. While a resident of Montgomery he was a member of the First Presbyterian church.
Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the1408th Army Air Forces Base Unit as a airplane engine mechanic and served during the later months of World War II in Germany and Paris, France. Melvin achieved the rank of Corporal.
As an airplane mechanic, Melvin was employed for 30 years by United Airlines. He retired in 1985. While residing in New Jersey he was a volunteer fireman and locally was a member of the Riverside Airplane Club.
Melvin's death severs a marriage bond of 61 years to Ruth (Zielsdorff) Peifer. Also surviving are three children: Jodi Marie Peterson and husband, Dennis, of Bangor, PA; James T. Peifer of Croydon, PA and Jason R. Peifer and wife, Laura, of Bangor, PA; two grandchildren: Sara Peifer of Phillipsburg, NJ and Nicholas Peifer of Bangor, PA and one sister: Druscilla Heller of Montgomery.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 4:00 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth Sts., Bloomsburg, with Rev. Stephen Cureton, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg, officiating. Friends will be received on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services. Family will provide flowers; contributions in Melvin's memory are suggested to either Hospice or Ronald McDonald House, 550 Mickle Blvd., Camden NJ 08103.
