Obituary

Marie C. McGovern, age 93, of 442 W. Main St., Bloomsburg, died on Monday, January 11, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family.
Marie was born on Thursday, May 27, 1916 in Wilmington, DE a daughter of the late Peter Leo and Sara (Anderson) Meehan. In 1934, she graduated from the West Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia. During World War II she was employed by the Federal Government as a Telecommunications Specialist.
As a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Marie was a founding member and first President of the Casey Club. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary. She served on the Regional Advisory Board of Mental Health Mental Retardation and was an Election Poll Official.

Lovingly called "Nana", Marie was known for her love of family and friends, a wonderful sense of humor, generosity and her ability to find the good in life. Marie enjoyed reading, traveling extensively and most importantly her family vacations in Siesta Key, FL.

On November 20, 1972, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, John E. McGovern, Sr. Survivors include five children: John E. "Jack" McGovern, Jr. and wife, Lorraine, of McMurray, PA; AnnMarie T. Bowman of Bloomsburg, Elizabeth F. "Betsy" Simons of West Chester, PA; Dolores M. "Dee" McGovern of Bloomsburg and Thomas E. McGovern of Bloomsburg; five grandchildren: Timothy A. Simons, Denise E. McCormick and husband, Louis, Kevin J. Simons, John E. McGovern III, and Katherine M. McGovern; two great grandchildren; Cassandra and Shea McCormick. Marie was also preceded in death by a sister: Leona D. Dowrick on February 9, 2005 and a brother Edward L. Meehan on September 8, 1996.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Marie's visitation on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg, with a Christian Wake Service at 9 p.m. On Saturday there will also be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Columba Catholic Church, Iron at Third Street, Bloomsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with her pastor, Rev. Paul R. Fisher, as celebrant. Flowers will be provided by the family.
