M. Ernest Underwood , age 93, of Bloomsburg, died on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of Geisinger Columbia Montour Hospice.
Ernest was born on Monday, September 3, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of the late James and Grace (Holt) Underwoood. Throughout his younger years, Ernest attended the Bloomsburg area schools, and later graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1942.
For many years, Ernest was employed as a Sales Manager of Kerr McGee Chemical , Espy. He continued his sales career with several area companies until his retirement. During his retirement he was an active volunteer with Columbia Montour Tourist Agency and was a part time employee of the former Columbia County Farmers National Bank.
As a boy and a young man, Ernest worked on the family farm. It was an important part of his life and character. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hunting, fishing and boating.
On September 22, 1963, Ernest married his loving wife, the former Jean Narber.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was also preceded by two brothers: James Quinter Underwood, Jr. and Kenton H. Underwood.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Jean N.Underwood; two children: Beth (David) Kline of Bloomsburg and Thomas S. Underwood of Catawissa; twin brother, M. Dean Underwood of Pinehurst, NC and sister: Marion Smith of Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family, with Rev. Dr. Elizabeth McCormick, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Graveside committal services will be held in Lightstreet Highland Cemetery. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Underwood family.
