Leonard E. Yorty, Sr., age 82, of Bloomsburg, died on Monday, May 4, 2020, a resident of The Gardens at Orangeville. He was a resident of his home in Bloomsburg for over 6 years.
Leonard was born on Friday, May 14, 1937 in Philadelphia, a son of the late Elmer and Alice (Dyer) Yorty. Throughout his younger years, Leonard attended the Bloomsburg schools where he was quarterback for the high school football team and later graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1955 . For many years, Leonard was employed by AMP Industries as a mechanic until his retirement in 2011. In his younger years he was an accomplished go kart racer. Leonard enjoyed spending his time watching NASCAR racing and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Following an accident, he became an active participant in wheel chair games, particularly basketball.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was also preceded by his wife, Kay (Hertz) Yorty on September 9, 2011; a son, Thomas Yorty; a grandson, David Yorty; and a brother, Norman Yorty.
Survivors include two sons: Leonard Yorty, Jr. and wife, Deborah, of Hanover, PA and Timothy Yorty and wife, Christine, of Eaton Rapids, MI, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and two siblings: Joanne Sneidman and husband, Dale, and Frank Yorty and wife, Merrilie, both of Bloomsburg, PA.
Due to recent events and the current CDC guidelines, a memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced. Leonard's family apologizes for restricting his family and friends from paying respects at this time. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth St., is honored to be serving the Yorty and Sneidman families.
