Larry Simpson, 83, was born in Harrisburg, PA on August 12, 1941 to Dwight and Mary Simpson (Plitt). He was one of four boys-George Duff, Dwight Simpson, and Ron Simpson. During his high school career, Larry was quite the athlete-lettering in track, football, and basketball. If you had the chance to go back in time, you would find article after article about his athletic successes, but they would also highlight how well liked and kind he was.
After high school, Larry attended West Chester University planning to become a gym teacher in order to share his love of the game, well games really, with the children he hoped to someday teach. But while playing college football, Larry eventually realized that academic life wasn't his true calling. He left school, joined the National Guard where he became a platoon leader, married Joan Simpson (Prowell) in 1964, and began what would eventually become his lifelong career in insurance, eventually retiring as a branch manager.
Following his career from Harrisburg to the Scranton area, Larry continued to play basketball with a group of neighborhood guys, became a Red Cross Gold Pin Donor, and golfed for many years with lifelong friend Phil Wolfe while also caring for and supporting his wife and daughter in all they did.
In retirement, Larry became an avid reader, heading to the library almost every week. He also taught non-English speakers how to read as a volunteer for a tutoring program and volunteered at the local high school. Larry's love of sports continued to be seen in his fandom of the New York Yankees and Penn State football. His cheers and jeers while dressed in his sports gear will always be remembered.
Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Simpson (Prowell), daughter Joanna Calarco (Simpson), son-in-law Robert Calarco, grandson Ryan Mercer, granddaughter Kamryn Mercer, and brother Ron Simpson.
Larry was a private person who never liked to be the center of attention. In light of this, and to honor his wishes, no public services will be held. Instead, consider making a donation to the Berwick Area School District High School Library or to the Columbia County SPCA to honor Larry's love of books and animals.
Larry was the best dad and grandpa anyone could ask for. His selflessness when it came to family was something we all strive to match. From showing up every day of their elementary and high school years to get his grandkids ready then driving them to school, to taking care of his grand-pets, to all the lengthy phone calls when only his advice would do, Larry did it all with a heart full of love. Gpa, sometimes affectionately known as Larry Popcorn, leaves a space that no one else could ever fill.
