Joseph D. "Joe" Hassel, Sr., age 80, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Joe was a resident of his home in Bloomsburg for over 30 years. He went to be with his wife of over 57 years, MaryAnn Hassel that he cared for in sickness and health.
He was born on Friday, September 18, 1942, in Shenandoah, a son of the late Elwood and Emma (Greene) Shoup. He graduated from the Mahanoy Area High School. Joe faithfully served in the United State Air Force for over 25 years until his retirement in 1989. He was employed by Bloomsburg Area School District as the Superintendent of the Maintenance Department until his retirement. Joe will be fondly remembered by his constant companion, Lucky.
In addition to his parents, Joe was also preceded in death by his loving wife, MaryAnn Hassel on September 2, 2022, and his furry friend, Bud.
Survivors include his three beloved children: JoAnn Hassel-Jones and husband Kevin of Onancock, VA, Mary C. Hassel and companion Terry Kreamer of Numidia, Joseph D. Hassel, Jr. and wife Jeni of Berwick, five grandchildren: Breanna M. Pursel and companion Matt Trumble of Berwick, Amber Pursel and companion Josh Bundick of Onancock, VA, Cody Pursel and wife Jessica of Danville, Christopher Cooper and wife Caitlin of Catawissa, Jordan Hassel of Berwick, and seven great-grandchildren: Harlee Moyer, Morgan Trumble, Trenton Whetstone, Dallas Parsons, Easton Cooper, Eleanor Cooper, Cailie Mausteller.
Memorial Services for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Bloomsburg VFW Post 804, 1258 Millville Rd, Bloomsburg, PA.
