John Stugrin, age 97, formerly of Catawissa, a resident of Dushore and Laporte since 2004, died Thursday, October 21, in The Highlands Care Center, Laporte. John was born Sunday, October 12, 1913 in New York, New York, a son of the late Samuel and Theresa Boback Stugrin.
John attended a one room school in the Numidia area. During World War II he served with the US Army Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater on the Aleutian Islands. Following his military service, John worked as a presser at the former Emenee Shirt Factory, Catawissa, for 35 years retiring in 1978.
As a long time member of St. Columba Catholic Parish, John was an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Catawissa VFW.
Preceding John in death was his wife of 56 years: Mary Martinchek Stugrin on November 3, 2004. Also preceding him were siblings: Effie Verhousky, Mary Sitarick, Andrew Stugrin, Nick Stugrin, Mildred Stugrin, Anna Mudrick and Joseph Stugrin.
Survivors include two daughters: Carol A. Roinick and husband, Joseph, of Laporte and Ann Marie Lessig of Richmond VA; two sons: John A. Stugrin and wife, Mimi, of Trout Run, PA and Thomas A. Stugrin of Denver, Pa; two grandsons: Jason Roinick and Mark Roinick and three great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, October 25 in St. Columba Catholic Church, Third & Iron Sts., Bloomsburg with Rev. Bert Kozen, Immaculate Conception Parish of Bastress, Pa, presiding. Burial will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.
Friends will be received Sunday at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg from 6 to 8 pm where a Vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to White Haven Food Pantry c/o Jack Facenda 1028Foster Ave., White Haven, PA 18661.
