John E. "Jack" Hartzel, age 86, of Mifflinville, formerly of Bloomsburg, passed away on Monday evening, January 23, 2023, at his home.
He was born on Friday, January 15, 1937 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Earl and Hazel (Hess) Hartzel. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in December, 1967. Jack graduated from the former Scott Township High School in 1954. He graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Business Education and Lehigh University in 1963 with a master's degree in Secondary Education Administration. He taught business classes at Liberty High School (Bethlehem, PA) from 1958 to 1967. He was Assistant Director at the Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School from 1967 to 1970. He was a professor at Bloomsburg University from 1970 to 1991. For over 21 years, he was employed by Bloomsburg University as an Assistant Professor until his retirement on December 31, 1991. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Gideons, Mill Race Golf Course, and Indian Hills Golf Course. Jack was a loving husband, father and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was very involved at Calvary Baptist Church, including serving as a deacon for many years. He was also on the school committee, taught computer class and the statistician for the girls' basketball team at Bloomsburg Christian School. His favorite hobby was golfing.
In addition to his parents, Jack was also preceded by brother, James Hartzel.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Nancy Jane Hartzel whom he married on July 25,1959; two daughters, Kathleen Hartzel of Pittsburgh, and Carolyn Broadt and her husband Dan of Bloomsburg, four grandchildren; Rebecca Winkler and her husband Aaron of Bethlehem, Kristen Gol and her husband Dan of Bethlehem, Michael Broadt of Bloomsburg, Joshua Broadt of Bloomsburg; a great-grandson, Landon Winkler of Bethlehem; two brothers, Charles Hartzell and his wife Lucy, and Marvin Hartzell and his wife Linda.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church, 3300 Ridge Road, Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will begin on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Timothy G. Smith, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the Lightstreet Highland Cemetery, Bloomsburg. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Hartzel family.
