John F. H. Magagna was born at the Nesbitt Hospital in Kingston, Pennsylvania on March 31, 1969, to Diane Ringawa Magagna and John F. Magagna. He first attended school at Wyoming Seminary Lower School until the family moved to Tehran, Iran, where his father was headmaster of an American international school. John attended school at the elementary level in Iran for two years and then relocated to Bloomsburg, where he attended Bloomsburg public schools until he graduated, interrupted by a six-month interlude in Indonesia where he attended Jakarta International School.
After graduating from Bloomsburg High School in 1988, he attended Penn State University and then began a lifelong career in the steel industry. During his career he developed sophisticated skills in the installation of very delicate and precise machinery. His talents were widely sought, and he was asked to travel around the country to take on special projects requiring a very high level of expertise. John was a natural leader and was known in the industry for his ability to supervise his team with great diplomacy and tact.
John's greatest passion was music. He was highly gifted musically, learning how to express himself through playing acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, ukulele, and others. He was also an avid sportsman and greatly enjoyed skiing in Colorado and fly fishing in Montana. He became an extremely skillful downhill skier and quickly learned the finer points of fly fishing for trout. He also enjoyed hunting pheasants and deer in Pennsylvania with his father, and the hunting gang. He had many joys in life, but his greatest loves and commitment were to his wife, family, and friends. He will be sorely missed by all those who had the joy of knowing him.
John now joins his beloved mother Diane Ringawa Magagna and his sister Erica Magagna Hock and will be laid to rest alongside them at St. Mary's Cemetery in Wilkes Barre.
John is survived by many loving family members: his wife Valerie Magagna; daughter Lisa McBrearty; father John F. Magagna; siblings Diane Sherman, Jessica Snyder, James Magagna, and Sarah Magagna; nephews Gavin Hawk, Colby Sherman, and Ethan Snyder; and nieces Ali Brown, Kelsey Knorr, Rachel Snyder, Felix Brown, Emmerson Brown, and Alyra Sherman.
Services will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and the Northeast Pennsylvania SPCA. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Magagna family.
