Obituary

John Green, age 77, passed away at his home in Bloomsburg on May 10, 2023, after a long battle with cancer and CIDP, an autoimmune disease. An Irish American storyteller by nature, John loved talking to neighbors, friends, and strangers alike. In sweeter days, he was an avid athlete, playing tennis, baseball, basketball, swimming, and skiing.

Born in Girardville, PA to the late John Green, Sr. and Frances (Smith) Green, he was happiest when surrounded by family, and spent his final days under the care of those he loved the most. John was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Ellen Kessell and Ann Marie Corrigan, and is survived by brother Thomas Green and sister Kathy Longenberger, and their families.

John served the country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He shared stories about his time in Fort Sill, Fort Leonard Wood, and Heidelberg, Germany, making new friends, and sending notes home to his loved ones. John attended Penn State University, Shippensburg University, and Bloomsburg University, with studies in history and counseling. Oh, the stories he would tell as a reporter for The Daily Item (Sunbury), and as a Bloomsburg High School guidance counselor for 31 years. During his tenure at BHS, he also served as freshman class advisor, BAEA president, United Way liaison, and coached tennis and chess.

In retirement, John was an advocate for his neighbors, including serving on the board of Camp Victory, and, as you may have heard, as the President of the Town Pool Operating Board (now Friends of the Town Pool). He loved this town and cared deeply for improving the quality of life of those living here.

In 1993, John married the love of his life, Jeannie (Bachinger) Green. His family expanded tenfold in people and in love. He was father to Maureen (Green), Alison (Green Myers), Kurt (Schmidt), and Greta (Schmidt); grandfather to Cleary (Schmidt) and Will (Myers). Some of his favorite times were spent in the company of his children's partners, Caitlin, Garry, and Moya, as well as his mother-in-law Janet (Trudnak) Bachinger. He enjoyed sharing stories with his extended family including beloved nieces, nephews, godchildren, as well as Maria Clarken, the Woodmencys (Jackson Hole, WY), Bensons (Lancaster, PA), and Bachingers (Bloomsburg, PA). The people he loved, and who loved him, are simply too many to list.

Private rites will be with his immediate family, and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Bloomsburg Town Park near the river (swings & slides) on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 2:00 pm. All who knew and cared for John Green, please join his family who will share stories on his behalf beginning at 2:30pm. Attendees will be invited to share memories and stories during the celebration as well.

The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Green family.
