John F. Babb, age 95, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Saturday evening, November 2, 2024, at the Sunset Ridge Healthcare Center in Bloomsburg. John was a resident of Bloomsburg for over 65 years.
He was born on Saturday, September 28, 1929 in Montgomery, PA a son of the late Walter E. and Lois Emma (Travelet) Babb. John graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1947. He attended Western Maryland College for three years where he played football and baseball. John expanded his education by attending Bloomsburg State Teacher's College, graduating with a bachelor's degree and later attended Bucknell University earning a master's degree in education.
On January 13, 1951, John married his loving wife the former, Alice Girton, who preceded him in death on October 14, 2013. For over 30 years, John was employed by Bloomsburg High School as a teacher until his retirement in 1985 and had previously taught at Hughesville High School for 4 years. He worked as a PIAA official for basketball, football and baseball. John also served as the baseball coach for 25 years at Bloomsburg High School, and after retiring, he was named head baseball coach at Bloomsburg University, coaching there for six years. He was honored by Bloomsburg High School, having the baseball field named after him and was named one of the top 100 sports figures in NE Pennsylvania. John was a member of the
Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, serving as an usher, communion steward, and Sunday school teacher for many years.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was also preceded in death by a sister; Gladys Creveling and two brothers; Robert Babb and Carl Babb.
Survivors include his two beloved children, a daughter, Barbara Babb and her husband Peter Toran of Lenox, MA, a son, Robert "Bob" Babb and his wife Gilly of Baltimore, MD, six grandchildren, Harrison Kobb of Brooklyn, NY, Jordan Kobb and wife Sarah Hoefle of Boston, MA, Marin Kobb of Oakland, CA, Gillian Miller and her husband Chris of Dunkirk, MD, Olivia Babb of Baltimore, MD, and Andrew Babb of Baltimore, MD. He also had two great-grandchildren, Sophie Kobb of Boston, MA, and Christopher Miller of Dunkirk, MD.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg. Friends and family will also be received on Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Wesley United Methodist Church, 130 W. Third St., Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will begin on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 11:00 am with Rev. Mark F. Reisinger, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg.
