Joan L.
Schwalm
October 24, 1954 – June 5, 2026
Joan L. (Mace) McCurley Schwalm, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Locust Township on Friday, June 5, 2026, with her family at her side. Born in Hazelton on March 6, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Edna (Jones) Mace.
Joan was a 1954 graduate of West Hazelton High School. On October 24, 1954, she wed her high school sweetheart, John G. “Jack” McCurley. They settled in Lime Ridge, raising three children and creating many memories. Joan lovingly cared for Jack until his death from ALS in December 1980. She went on to work as a nursing assistant at Geisinger Medical Center, where she met patient, Clair Schwalm, of Valley View. She and Clair married on March 8, 1988, and she became a stepmother to his five adult children. They sold their individual homes in exchange for a custom RV and an adventure across the country together. They especially enjoyed visiting the Smokey Mountains and Branson, MO. After a few years in Arizona, Joan and Clair returned to PA in 1996 and built a home in Locust Township, where they remained together until Clair’s death on October 3, 2011. Throughout her venturesome life, Joan visited every U.S. state, except Alaska. She also enjoyed bus trips, gardening, and spending time with her beloved family.
Joan is survived by a son, John C. McCurley and wife, Margie, of Kingston; two daughters: Cheryl J. Yoder and husband, Phil, of Nescopeck and Lori E. Clemens and husband, Greg, of Millville; grandchildren: Adam, Bryan, and Megan McCurley, Jackie, Vanessa and Phillip Yoder, Erin (Clemens) Pauling, and Tara (Clemens) Batiuk; six great-grandchildren; step-children: Kevin Schwalm, Claire Nicksi, Debbie Schwartz, and Jodi Spotts; numerous step-grandchildren; and friend and caregiver, Sharon Evans.
In addition to her husbands and parents, Joan was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Mace; sister, Betty Masteller; step-son, Steven Schwalm; and beloved pets Heidi, Brigette, Blossom, and Holly Belle.
At Joan’s request, her services are private. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Pennsylvania SPCA Central PA Center, 1467 Bloom Road, Danville, PA 17821 or to the church that she attended, Lime Ridge New Hope Church (formerly Lime Ridge United Methodist Church), 6405 4th Street, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., of Bloomsburg, is honored to serve Joan's family.
