She passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, a resident of the Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville, where she resided for 10 years. She previously lived in Haddon Twp. NJ for 30 years. Her younger years were spent in Nanticoke. She was born June 21, 1935 in Wilkes Barre, PA, a daughter of the late Edward and Ethel (Youron) Davis. She was a 1953 graduate of Nanticoke High School and studied nursing at Albert Einstein Medical College in Philadelphia.
The appellation of R.N. was the greatest source of pride and achievement long after her retirement. Being a nurse was very much a part of her identity. She cared for children most of her 30-year career in the West Jersey Hospital (Virtua) Health System, and she made it official with a Certification in Pediatric Nursing. She was an exceptional nurse.
Joan was a member of the First English Baptist Church, a longtime member of The Order of the Eastern Star #174 and its predecessor, The International Order of the Rainbow Girls, where she faithfully served as a delegate of the Wilkes Barre Assembly.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 47 years, William J. George, Sr. who preceded her in death on August 13, 2005.
Survivors include three children: Gweneth G., wife of Fran O'Shaughnessy of Cape May, NJ, Glynnis G., wife of Matthew R. Engwall of Mebane, NC, and William J. (John) George Jr., partner of Jacolynn Wenz of Kalkaska, MI; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one niece, two nephews and a dear brother, John E. (Jack) Davis of Sheatown, Nanticoke, PA.
Family and friends are invited to gather at 11:00 am on April 11, 2026, in the Chapel at The Emmanuel Center for Nursing, 11 Schoolhouse Road, Danville, PA, to celebrate her life in a memorial service with her pastor, Rev. Lee Barnhardt, officiating. There will be no visitation. A private burial will be held in Oaklawn Cemetery, Wilkes Barre, PA, at the convenience of the family.
