James W. McCarthy, age 84, of Catawissa, passed away at his home on Wednesday morning, March 1, 2023. He was a resident of his home in Catawissa his whole life.
He was born on Tuesday, December 20, 1938 in Catawissa, a son of the late Joseph and Minnie (Fetterman) McCarthy. He graduated from the former Catawissa High School in 1956. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy enlisting in1956 and was honorably discharged in 1959. On September 10, 1977, James married his loving wife, the former Shirley M. Carter they celebrated 35 years of marriage until her death on July 20, 2013. For over 25 years, James was employed by Merck & Co., Inc., Riverside as an electrician until his retirement on February 1, 2001. He then went to work for Columbia County Maintenance for nine years until his retirement in 2014. He enjoyed hunting, he loved his kids and grandkids and also his beloved cat, Orphy.
In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded in death by three brothers: Joseph McCarthy, Dennis McCarthy and Jay McCarthy.
Survivors include six children: Megan Hare and husband Zachary of Hanover, Diane McCormick and husband Mark of Catawissa, James A. McCarthy and wife Kathy of Milton, Patrick A. McCarthy of Harrisburg, Todd J. McCarthy of Catawissa, Holly Saxton and husband Michael of Sunbury; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister, Rose Malkoski of Catawissa, two brothers, Dean McCarthy of Bloomsburg, and William McCarthy of Danville.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth St in Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will begin on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Michael Spagnuolo, pastor of Catawissa Christian Church, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the Hillside Cemetery, Catawissa with military honors provided by the Catawissa VFW, Post #8306. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the McCarthy family.
