James Eugene "Gene" Alwood, Sr., 88, of Danville formerly of Bloomsburg, died peacefully at the Nazareth Memory Center on Friday, May 3, 2024. Gene was a loving husband to Keiffer (Sanders) Alwood, whom he married on December 28, 1958. He first met her in kindergarten, mischievously dipping her pigtails in ink. He was a caring father of James (Elizabeth), David (Nancy), and Charlene (Rob); grandfather "pop-pop" of Robyn (Alladin), Geena (Zac), Kaleigh, Zachary, and Jeremy; and great-grandfather of Luminara, Maddy, and Dean. He is also survived by his brother, John (Gussie), sisters in law, Nancy and Terrie. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Roberta (Bellamy) Alwood; an infant daughter Katherine Jean; and his brothers, Warren and Bob.
Gene was born in Ridgeland, SC on Feb 23, 1936. He graduated from Beaufort High School in 1954 and then enlisted in the Navy. He transferred to the Naval Academy but left in order to marry his sweetheart. He earned his AB in Mathematics in 1969 from Rutgers University. Starting in 1970, he worked for Educational Testing Services in Princeton, New Jersey for 11 years. During that time, he earned a MS and an Ed.D. in Statistics from Rutgers. Hired by PP&L in 1982, he was a psychometrist at its Nuclear Training Center in Berwick for 17 years until his retirement in 1999. Afterwards, he enjoyed many cruises and trips abroad with the love of his life.
Gene also enjoyed bowling, tennis, running, biking, scuba diving, skiing, golfing, genealogy and various academic interests. He organized several class reunions and served as deacon for the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg.
Gene's family extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Nazareth Memory Center for their dedicated and loving service to him over the past two and a half years.
Funeral Services will begin on Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 345 Market Street, Bloomsburg with Rev. Steve Cureton and Rev. Pamela Meilands, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the New Rosemont Cemetery, Bloomsburg. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Alwood family.
