Obituary

On February 23rd, 2023, Jack Gary Couch joined the love of his life, Roberta "Bobbie" and is now with her among the heavenly stars. Jack was born on April 5, 1936, in Pocatello, Idaho to Howard and Thella (Hess) Couch. Jack was the oldest of three sons which included Keith and Ray Couch.

Jack was generous and kind and often helped others who were less fortunate. He had a good sense of humor, which friends and family appreciated, and was quick witted even towards the end of his life. In his younger years, he played the trombone in a band and had an appreciation for jazz music. As an adult, he enjoyed walking at the Montour Preserve, camping, fishing, taking naps, reading novels, tending to his fruit trees, gardening and traveling with his wife, Bobbie to Hilton Head Island. Above all, Jack's passion was teaching. Jack went on to earn two Ph.D.'s, one of which was in health physics. He taught at Southern Oregon College, Fermilab outside of Chicago, Princeton University's Plasma Physics Lab, and finally settled down as a director of health physics at Bloomsburg University. Jack loved his work and often kept in touch with some of his students to hear about their careers after graduating. He frequently talked about the experiments he was working on during dinner and would work early in the mornings and late in the evenings to make improvements.

Along with his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife Bobbie Couch and his brother Keith Couch. Jack is survived by his daughters Laura Couch and her companion Simon Hjorth Christensen of Aarhus, Denmark; Christi Ziegler of Oregon City, Oregon; Nanette Caruh of Bend, Oregon; Linda Liebert of Sacramento, California; Karen Peterson of Idaho Falls, Idaho and his son Steven Couch of Oregon City, Oregon and his wife Laurie. His blended family included Kimberly Todd of Bloomsburg and her companion Joseph Opsitos; Shelly Storper of Bloomsburg and fiancée Ken Herritt. Together from his two marriages, Jack shared a total of 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Surviving also is his brother Ray Couch, his wife Sherry and his sister-in-law Karen Couch.
