Helen M. Sponenberg, age 88 a resident at Orangeville Nursing and Rehab Center since January, 2005 died Tuesday, October 14 at Berwick Hospital where she had been admitted Sunday. Prior to moving to Orangeville Nursing, Helen lived at 12 Fire Hall Road, Buckhorn most of her life.
Helen was born April 10, 1920 in Hemlock Township, the only child of Harry D. and Jennie M. (Harvey) Fausey. She attended Buckhorn schools and Bloomsburg High School. She was last employed at Briar Knitting for many years, retiring in 1982. She had also been employed at Milco and Kecks Draperies.
Helen was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn. For many years she had been a Justice of the Peace and Notary. Helen was a life member and past President of Buckhorn Fire Co. Auxiliary, served as Secretary and Bookkeeper of the family business, Buckhorn Garage which was run by her late husband and she was Democratic Committee Woman for many years.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Clark Sponenberg, Sr. January 23, 2001; a son: Wilbur C. Sponenberg, Jr. in 1993 and a daughter: Janet Hess in 2006.
Survivors include four daughters: Mary Lou Musselman and her husband, Bernard, Buckhorn, Shirley Collins and her husband, Jerry, Buckhorn, Sandra Sponenberg, Bloomsburg and Rose Marie Ackerman and her husband Kenneth, Chapel Hill NC; a son Robert Sponenberg and his wife, Francie, Bloomsburg; 29 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Private funeral services will be at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg with Rev. Allen F. Acor officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Helen's name are suggested to the No Kill Shelter or Animal Resource Center.
