Heister H. Bittenbender Jr., age 92, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, a resident of Glenbrook Rehabilitation and Health Center, Berwick. Heister was a resident of his home in Scott Twp. for over 64 years.
Heister was born on Saturday, October 29, 1932, in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Heister H. and Mary (White) Bittenbender. He graduated from the Bloomsburg High School. He faithfully served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict enlisting on February 10, 1953, and was honorably discharged on January 19, 1955. On June 25, 1955, Heister married his loving wife, the former Dorothy M. Helwig who preceded him in death on April 23, 2021. For many years, Heister was employed by The Press Enterprise as a Reporter until his retirement in 1997. Heister was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, weather recording and traveling with his wife, especially out west. He cheered for the Kansas City Chiefs and loved Yorkshire terriers.
In addition to his parents and wife, Heister was also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Fritz, and a brother-in-law, Frank Fritz.
Survivors include his beloved two sons: Heister H. Bittenbender III and his companion Jenny Jones of Danville, Alan W. Bittenbender and wife Luanne of Bloomsburg; a grandson, Zachary Welliver of Danville; a niece, Beth Ann Allem of Quakertown and a nephew, Steven Fritz of Bloomsburg.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will begin on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Michael Spagnuolo, Catawissa Christian Church, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg. Military Honors will be presented by The Columbia County Honor Guard. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Bittenbender family.
