Harland H. Shoemaker, Sr., age 80, of Almedia, Bloomsburg, died on Saturday morning, August 27, 2011. He was a resident of Almedia since 1957.
Harland was born on Tuesday, June 30, 1931 in Scott Township, a son of the late William and Lena (Moser) Shoemaker. He was a member of the 1949 Graduating Class of the Bloomsburg High School. Following his education, he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After returning to Almedia, he was employed by Magee Carpet Co. and also Dillon Floral. For over 20 years, he was employed by Bloomsburg University and worked as a plumber in the Maintenance Department until he retired in 1989. He was a member of the Ridge Street United Methodist Church in Almedia where he also served as a former trustee.
Harland was preceded in death by four brothers: Clayton, Ralph "Jack", Lester and Earl Shoemaker; and three sisters: Marie Ludwig, Velma Loreman and Arlene Oakum. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley (Martenas) Shoemaker; a daughter: Trudy Hauck and husband, Ira, of Almedia; a son Harland H. Shoemaker, Jr. of Waldorf, MD; two granddaughters: Stefanie Sinkaus and husband, Philip, and Martina Hauck; and two great-grandsons: Nicholas and Michael Sinkaus.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 31 at 11 a.m. from the Ridge Street United Methodist Church, 145 Ridge St. in Almedia, with Rev. Robert J. Eddinger, officiating. There will be no public viewing or visitation time. Private Graveside Services will be held in Creveling Cemetery. The Shoemaker family is being assisted by the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth St. in Bloomsburg. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Ridge Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
