Gloria S. Sugg, 93, of the Maria Joseph Manor Continuing Care Community, 875 Montour Blvd., Danville, PA and formerly of Bloomsburg, PA, Zephyhills, FL, and Bowmansville, NY, died on September 22, 2016, at the Emmanuel Center for Nursing in Danville. Born November 10, 1922 in Spencer, New York, she was the eldest child of the late Llewellyn Franklin Scott and Virginia Lilac (Beebe) Scott.
Mrs. Sugg was a 1940 graduate of Ithaca High School, Ithaca, N.Y., and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY, in 1962. She taught elementary grades for over 20 years in New York schools in Bowmansville, Cheektowaga, and Lancaster. In addition, she served for a time as a school librarian. In Zephyrhills, she volunteered in a tax preparation program for the elderly. She served in the United States Marine Corps in 1945 just as the war was ending. She enjoyed presenting the life experiences of the woman Marine for community groups.
Mrs. Sugg is a member of St. Columba Parish, Bloomsburg, PA. She served as a Eucharistic Minister in Zephyrhills, FL, as well as St. Columba, Bloomsburg, PA, and, in pastoral care at the Geisinger Medical Center. With her husband, she participated at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Danville, PA. reading scripture and praying the rosary. She served as Treasurer and President of the Casey Club at St. Columba, volunteered in the library at the parish school, and was "Mrs. Santa Claus" for children there on several occasions. Her interest in genealogy has enriched numerous lineages of her own family groups and she volunteered for several years for the Columbia County Historical Society. She was a member of the Fort McClure Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Miquon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists. She enjoyed traveling, served on the Board of Directors at the Meadows of the Maria Joseph Manor Continuing Care Committee as its secretary and volunteered at the Community Center reception desk. She enjoyed gardening, aquariums, and wearing distinctive hats.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Paul W. Sugg on September 9, 2016, a son, Paul W. Sugg, Jr. in 1952, and her brother, the Rev. Franklin L. Scott in 1993.
Survivors include her three daughters: Laurinda B. Hoffer (Gilbert) of Blue Bell, PA, Dorette E. (Francis) Welk of Pittsburgh, PA, and Charleen R. Szabo (Robert deVesty) of Jupiter, FL; three grandsons, Paul (Courtney) Welk of Wexford, PA, John (Karen) Welk of Schuyler, VA, and Jeffrey (Kimberly) Welk of Sewickley, PA; seven great grandchildren, Sebastian, Sarah, Lilith, Ryan, Brady, Ethan, and Tyler; two sisters, Marvel E. Sammarco of Wesley Chapel, FL, and Joyce L. Etzler of Fayetteville, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gloria and Paul will be celebrated on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5337 Genesee Street, Bowmansville, NY. A single joint inurnment will follow in the Parish cemetery. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street in Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Sugg family.
