Obituary

Glen A. Spaid, age 89, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025, a resident of the Brookdale Assisted Living, Bloomsburg. He was a resident of his home in Scott Township for over 63 years.

Glen was born on Tuesday, June 23, 1936, in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Arthur E. and Arlene M. (Decker) Spaid. He graduated from the Scott Township High School, 1954. He expanded his education by attending Pennsylvania State University & Bloomsburg State Teachers College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. On July 11, 1959, Glen married his loving wife, the former Minerva "Susie" Karnes. He began his teaching career at Central Columbia School District. However, he taught at Danville High School for two years. Then returning back to Central, he served as Mathematics Department Chairman and remained at the position until his retirement. Glen coached various sports, tennis, bowling, football and basketball. Several of those teams won numerous championships. He was inducted into the Central Columbia Hall of Fame in 2006 as a high school soccer team member and in 2007 for outstanding athlete. For over 37 years, Glen was employed by Central Columbia High School as a teacher until his retirement on June 14, 1996.

Glen was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Espy where he served as church council and as Finance Committee Chair. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior after attending the Bill Glass Evangelist services at the Bloomsburg Fair Grounds early in his marriage. He was also a member of the Elks, Bloomsburg Post 436, Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) treasurer and scholarship chair and Espy Fire Co. He was the neighborhood volunteer for the heart and cancer societies. He enjoyed traveling with his wife visiting all 50 states, participating in church activities and watching their grandchildren grow into caring adults. One of his favorite memories was a month long trip he took with his wife and grandchildren. They traveled to the western United States and visited several national parks. Glen was an avid Penn State and BU sports fan. For almost 50 years, he enjoyed attending Penn State games with friends and family at Beaver Stadium.

In addition to his parents, Glen was also preceded in death by two brothers: Donald Spaid and Dale Spaid, two sisters: Inez Wagner and Dorothy Sitler.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 66 years, "Susie" Spaid of Bloomsburg; two daughters: Virginia DeFrancesco and husband Carmen of Sunbury, Patricia Williams and husband Daryl of Bloomsburg; three grandchildren: Matthew Williams and wife Samantha, Brandon Williams and Molly Malatesta and husband Nicholas; two sisters in law: Jean Vincent and Mary Poisson also a brother-in-law, James Karnes. His family was the most important part of his life, and he enjoyed many good times with them.

A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church, Espy, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg.

Funeral Services will begin on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Gordon E. Smith, officiating. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Spaid family.
