George L. "Sam" Harding, age 89, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Thursday morning, February 8, 2024, he was a resident of The Gardens at Orangeville. He spent the majority of his life residing in Millville.
He was born on Tuesday, May 29, 1934 in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, a son of the late Harry William and Bertha (Ritter) Harding. Sam graduated from Hughesville High School in 1952. During his high school years, he was a standout wrestler. He was a member of FFA, earning his Keystone Degree at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Sam earned multiple blue ribbons. His high school sweetheart, Beverly J. Dougherty, he married on February 28, 1953. His loving wife preceded him in death on January 4, 2020.
Sam was employed as a farmer and mechanic. He was a Certified New Holland Equipment Technician. He held several jobs in the farm industry including Farnsworth Farm Equipment and Log Barn Nursery where he restored tractors. In the JFK years, he worked in Washington, DC as a Transit Bus Driver. Additionally, Sam was an avid hunter and master gardener. Those who knew Sam would tell you they loved his animated storytelling, and he was always joining in a family joke or prank.
In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra L. Wright, two sisters, MaryJo Reed, Editha Baker and two brothers-in-law, Dale Farr and John Reed.
Survivors include his four beloved children; Christine L. Hess and partner Sam Rumberger of Bloomsburg, Steve L. Harding of Bloomsburg, Diane M. Rider and husband Don of Millville, Tyler W. Harding and wife Trina of Bloomsburg, a son-in-law Steven Wright of Millville, eight grandchildren; Lauren Harding, Natalie Hess, Darren Rider, Danielle Roeder and husband Levi, Jocelyn Wright and husband Thomas Novak, Tristan Wright, Cole Harding and wife Emily, Evan Harding and wife Sarah, a sister Virginia Farr of Millville and a brother-in-law, Bob Baker of Hughesville.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Mill-Green United Methodist Church, 75 South State St., Millville.
Funeral Services will begin on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 10:00 am at Mill-Green United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert W. Strozyk, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the Millville Cemetery, Millville. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Harding family.
