Emily Barbara George, age 81, a resident of East Eighth Street, Bloomsburg, since 1992 and formerly of Florida, died on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, a patient of Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
She was born on July 28, 1929, in Port Washington, Long Island, NY, a daughter of the late William and Emma Macha Bethel.
Barbara was a 1948 graduate of Miami Edison High School and a 1953 graduate of Florida State University, Tallahassee. She was last employed by the Dade county Public School as an Elementary Teacher. She taught first and second grade for 25 years.
She was a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'i Faith of Miami, FL where she served as group secretary for many years. During her time in Bloomsburg she was an active member of the Bloomsburg Civic Club.
Emily was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Harry J. George on April 20, 2010.
Survivors include two sons: Martin J. George of Bloomsburg and William J. George and wife, Renee, of Atlanta, Georgia; four grandchildren: William E. George, Isaac A. Hall-George, Julian Toomsen- Hall and Jessica Toomsen- Hall; and a brother: Norman Bethel of California.
A Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 10 to 11 am. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market Street at Eighth, Bloomsburg.
Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 am., with her brother, Norman Bethel, officiating. Graveside services will be held in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.
Memorial contributions in Barbara's memory are suggested to cancer or diabetes research.
