Obituary

Earl "Sam" B. Huntington, age 83, of Shuman Street in Catawissa, died on Sunday, January 16, 2011, a resident of Bloomsburg Health Care. Sam was a resident his home on Shuman Street for over 31 years and previously of Mill Street in Catawissa
Sam was born on Wednesday, September 14, 1927 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Herman and Kathryn Coleman Huntington. He was a member of the 1945 Graduating Class of the Bloomsburg High School. Earl served during World War II with the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1947. Until his retirement in 1989, he was employed by Merck & Co., Inc. in Riverside as a Chemical Operator for over 37 years.
Sam was a left-handed pitcher for the Tri-County Baseball League. He was also a past President and former Umpire for the Tri-County Baseball League. He was a member of Catawissa American Legion #541, the Catawissa Fire Company, the Catawissa Boat Club and former Catawissa Borough Council Member. He was also a member of the Elysburg Lodge # 349 F&AM, the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg, and the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge #436 BPOE. He was a member of the Christ United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Catawissa and served as a former member of the church council.
He was preceded in death by four sisters: a sister in infancy, Pearl, Betty Romig, Grace Wohlforth and as an adult, Pearl Huntington; and two brothers: Herman Huntington, Jr. and Harry Huntington
Surviving is his beloved wife of 61 years, Helen Getkin Huntington, married on March 26, 1949; a sister Barbara Gottshall and her husband, William, of Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will be held privately at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth Street in Bloomsburg with Rev. Gretchen M. Johanson, of Christ United Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Private Graveside services will be held in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge.
