Obituary

Duane E. Shuman, 78, of Mainville passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 13, 1944 in Bloomsburg, Duane was the son of the late Homer and Jennie (McMichael) Shuman. He became the eighth generation to farm his family's land in the Mainville area, something he continued to do right through this year's most recent harvest with his son and grandson continuing the tradition. He married Betty Jean (Burd) Shuman on November 12, 1966 and together they raised their three children, Sandra, Richard and Sherry.

As a lifelong farmer Duane was a proud member of the PA Farm Bureau, Holstein Association, PA State Conservation Committee, Land O'Lakes National Advisory Committee, Columbia County Farm Service Agency, and the Oriental Lodge 460 F&AM, Orangeville. He was a lifetime member of the Mainville Fire Company, North American Hunting Club, NRA and a charter member of the Mainville Sportsmen's Club. Duane was a Deacon and former Consistory President of the Emanuel Reformed Lutheran Church in Mainville. He was also a Columbia County 4-H Leader for over 25 years and served as a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 61, Mainville.

Through all of his memberships and activities, Duane was rewarded with numerous awards for Milk Quality, Dairy of Distinction, and a PA State Farm Show Hay Quality Grand Champion. He was proud to be a 50-year Exhibitor at the Bloomsburg Fair where the Shuman Farm took home both the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder Banners in 2022. He was instrumental in organizing the 1986 hay lift to drought-stricken farmers in the south.

Duane was happiest when he was outdoors. Enjoying hunting and fishing with family and friends that he held close to his heart as well as hunting trips to Canada and the western US. He also cherished traveling with his wife, Betty and family to their cabin on the Salmon River in NY in addition to Hawaii, Alaska, New England and Jamaica.

Even with all of his achievements, there is nothing Duane took more pride in than his family. Duane cherished every minute he was able to spend with his six grandchildren. He loved sharing his knowledge of hunting, farming and passing on his skills at Pass the Ace. He loved watching his grandchildren's events and the evening golf cart rides with his wife around their beautiful farm.

In addition to his parents, Duane was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marilyn S. Broadt, Judy Boody, and a brother-in-law, Bill Boody.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Jean Shuman, three children: Sandra Jean Tobey and husband Robert of Mifflinville, Richard D. Shuman and wife Debra of Mainville, Sherry Jean Minnig and husband Michael of Bloomsburg, six grandchildren, Tyler J. Breach, Steven Shuman and fiancé Nadine Sharr, Courtney Shuman, Megan Minnig, Molly Minnig, Miller Minnig, a sister, Janet Kelchner and husband Don of Orangeville, a brother, Thomas Shuman and wife Sue of Mainville, and a brother-in-law, Roger C.
