Obituary

Doyle E. Hess, age 84, of 15 Worman St., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 20, at the Grand View Health Homes where he was admitted earlier in the day. Doyle had been ill for several years. He was a resident of Espy since September and had previously lived on Fowlersville Road for 43 years. Mr. Hess was born Friday, January 8, 1926 in Berwick a son of the late Willis H., Sr. and Margaret Cooper Hess. He graduated from the Berwick High School in 1943. Afterward, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a rifle sharpshooter and a field radio operator. He participated in the assault and capture of Okinawa, le Shima and Ryukyo Islands. He was a Military Police Officer in Nagasaki immediately after the atom bomb was dropped. Doyle achieved the rank of Corporal before he was honorably discharged on June 24, 1946. Following his military service, Doyle worked in the construction field. He owned and operated Doyle Hess Contracting, retiring in 1999. Doyle attended Shiloh Bible Church, Almedia. He was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting coins and commerative plates. His life's passion was his family and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a kind and honorable man and will be dearly missed. Doyle was married for 63 years to Anna (Downs) Hess. Also surviving is a daughter: Carol Fuerneisen and husband Frank, of Pawleys Island, SC; three sons: Carl E. Hess and wife Irene, of Berwick, Jeffrey C. Hess of Bloomsburg, Eric S. Hess and wife Catherine, of Charlottesville, VA; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; three siblings: Marilyn H. Locascio and husband Salvatore, of Berwick, Terry L. Hess and wife Barbara, of Berwick and Willis H. Hess, Jr. and wife Holly, of Nescopeck. Doyle was preceded in death by a son: Alan L. Hess in 1970 and three brothers: Robert, Edward and Maynard. Friends will be received on Saturday from 12 noon until 1 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg, Services will begin at 1 p.m. with his sons, Jeff and Eric, officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held in Elan Memorial Park. Memorial contributions are suggested to Columbia Montour Home Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave. Suite 200, Bloomsburg.
