Obituary

Douglas Michael, owner of Columbia County Bread & Granola, died unexpectedly at the age of 66 at his home on Saturday, August 12th, 2023.

Doug's curiosity, sense of humor, and genuine love of humanity set the stage for his amazing life and legacy. Born October 14, 1956 in Columbus OH, Douglas became a Buckeye fan at an early age. While attending The Ohio State University, Douglas began working as a cartoonist for the Columbus Dispatch. These original cartoons have since been archived at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum which houses one of the largest collections of cartoons and comics in the world. Douglas moved to New York City in the early 80's and continued piecing together his freelance career, publishing a series of underground comic books and working as a cartoonist for National Lampoon, DC Comics, Fantagraphics, and the Waterkeeper Magazine (among others) while also reading manuscripts for literary agents at the William Morris Agency. Adopting the pseudonym William Seebring, Douglas also wrote several one act plays, one of which, "The Original Last Wish Baby", is published in "The Best American Short Plays 1995-97" and "The Bedford Introduction to Literature".

Doug's career took an unexpected turn after he contracted Lyme's disease, which set him on a new path investigating medication through diet, which soon became an obsession. After much research and trial and error, his unique flourless sprouted sourdough bread and flax granola became a reality. Columbia County Bread & Granola was established in 2008 in Bloomsburg.

Doug is survived by his life partner of 20 years, Sue O'Donnell, Bloomsburg; his daughter, Billie Rae Michael, Queens NY, and her mother Heidi Carlson, Albuquerque, NM; his sister Diane Michael Gilbert, Dayton OH; his brother, David Michael, Columbus OH; two nieces, Catherine Michael and Carolyn Culpepper, and a nephew Jesse Keith Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his father, George Richard Michael and his mother Nancy (Howe) Michael.

A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th, 2023, the day of Doug's birth, at the Caldwell Consistory, 150 Market St., Bloomsburg from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
