Obituary

Dorothy G. (Eyer) Messersmith, age 97, of Bloomsburg died on Tuesday evening, August 20, 2013 surrounded by her family and under the care of Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville. Dorothy was a resident of her daughter's home in Bloomsburg since 1997, and formerly resided in the Berwick area.
Dorothy was born on Wednesday, September 15, 1915 in Berwick, a daughter of the late Boyd and Jennie (Remley) Eyer. Throughout her younger years, Dorothy attended the Berwick Area Schools. For most of her working career, Dorothy was employed by McGregor Industries in the Quality Control Department located in Lime Ridge. She was a devoted and faithful member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Bloomsburg.
Dorothy was a former member of Berwick Women of the Moose. She enjoyed cooking and baking, the challenge of crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
Dorothy was preceded by her beloved husband, Paul D. Messersmith in 1973; a son, Paul D. Messersmith, Jr.; and five siblings: Frances Long, Glenn Eyer, Donald Eyer, Creta Lowe, and Carl Eyer also preceded her.
Survivors include a daughter: Nancy L. Martz of Bloomsburg; two granddaughters: Melodee Yoder and Joan Davis; four great-grandchildren; Michael Yoder, Heather Vassallo, Allison Yoder and Shyanna Davis and four great-great-grandchildren: Adalyn & Makella Vassallo, Haiden Yoder and Carter Lockhart; as well as a sister: Betty Berneski of West Melbourne, FL; and daughter-in-law: Susan Messersmith of Oregon.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, August 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will also begin on Friday, August 23 at 2 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg with Pastor Audrey M. Brosious, officiating. Graveside services where Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her late husband will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street in Berwick. Memorial contributions in Dorothy's name are suggested to: Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall, 410 Glenn Ave., Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
