Donald R. Shuman, age 86, of Danville, died on Monday evening, November 11, 2013, surrounded by his family and under the care of Columbia Montour Home Hospice. Donald had been battling ill health for many years, and placed under the care of hospice for over a year.
Don was born on Tuesday, October 25, 1927 in Danville, a son of the late Ray H. and Evelyn (Hess) Shuman. Throughout his younger years, Don attended the Mainville and the Beaver High School. On October 5, 1945, Don enlisted with the United States Navy where he served his country faithfully during World War II. As a Naval Hospital Corpsman, Don served aboard the U.S.S. Repose, and was awarded the American Area Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On October 22, 1948, Don was honorably discharge from his dedicated time of service to his country.
After returning home from the War, Don met and married his loving wife, the former Sarah G. Rupert, on September 24, 1949. For many years, they made their home in Beaver Township until moving to the Danville area in 1999. He was employed through many trades throughout the years, and worked for companies such as Magee Carpet Co., Milco Industries and the Fritz family trucking company. For over 14 years, he was employed in the Press Room of the local Press Enterprise until his retirement in 1989. For many years, he was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Mainville. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #945. Don loved spending his time educating himself through reading, fishing in Ontario with family, flying as a licensed pilot, hunting and working on the family farm. His primary enjoyment throughout his life was spending time with his grandchildren who will deeply miss him.
On June 8, 1989, Don was preceded in death by a son, William D. Shuman; a brother: Franklin Shuman and also a sister: Nancy Whitenight.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 64 years, Sarah G. Shuman; two daughters: Elsie Angus and husband, John, of Bloomsburg; Susan Millard and husband, Rob, of Mifflinville; two sons: Wayne Shuman and wife, Judy, of Mainville; and Clark Shuman and wife, April, of Danville; nine grandchildren: Ray and Katie Angus, Hope and Eric Millard, Wayne Shuman, Jr., Pam (Shuman) Slusser, Holly and Jamie Shuman, and Devon Hartman; two step-grandchildren: Kolby and Taylor Whitenight; and ten great-grandchildren; a brother: Conrad C. Shuman and wife, Patricia, of Bear, DE; and two sisters: Linda Brosious and husband, Tim, of Catawissa and Margaret 'Peg' Pickin and husband, Jack, of Bloomsburg. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m. from the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 320 Church Street in Mainville. A combined group of VFW/American Legion will provide full Military Honors.
