Donald F. Sharretts, age 91, formerly of Orange Street, Berwick, died on Wednesday, September 08, 2010 a resident of the Berwick Retirement Village. He was also a resident of Bloomsburg for many years before moving to his home on Orange Street.
Don was born on Friday, April 4, 1919, in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Fred G. and Nellie I. Wenner Sharretts. He was a member of the 1937 Graduating Class of the Bloomsburg High School. Donald served with the 258th Engineer Combat Battalion, United States Army in Central Europe during World War II as T5 Technician. He attended 51 of the 52 annual three day reunions of the 258th Eng. Combat Battalion Society, and served two terms as president and also as chaplain.
Until his retirement in 1980, Don was a second generation owner and operator of his family's furniture store, the former Sharretts Furniture Company located on Old Berwick Road the former Route 11. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Berwick, where he held the offices as Sunday School Superintendant, a Sunday School Teacher and served on the Church Council Committee.
Don was a Charter Member and past President of the Susquehanna Valley Region of Antique Automobile Club of America and later after ten years of qualification became a Master Judge. He was the proud owner of four antique automobiles, three antique motorcycles and one antique pick-up truck. He was an avid motorcycle rider for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, a 30 year member, past President and Master of Ceremonies of the Patterson Grove United Methodist Campgrounds, the Oriental Lodge #460 F&AM in Orangeville, the Caldwell Consistory, Ft. McClure Post #804 VFW, Valley of Bloomsburg American Legion Post #273 and the former Liberty Fire Company.
Don was preceded by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Eleanor Connor Sharretts; a grandson: Steven Knorr, two daughters: Denise C. McNamee on April 25, 2009 and Sandye Marteney; and three sisters: Betty Broadt, Marjorie Grant and Lois Mattera.
Survivors include three sons: Fred A. Sharretts and his wife, Gloria, of Westfield, PA; Donald F. "Skip" Sharretts II and his wife, Robyn, of Danville; Kevin G. Sharretts of Wapwallopen; a step-son: Theron S. Wenner, Jr. and his wife, Fran, of Owego, NY; ten grandchildren; and a sister: Rose Marie Sharretts of Williamsport.
Friends will be received on Sunday, September 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth Street in Bloomsburg and on Monday, September 13 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1600 Fowler Avenue in Berwick. The Oriental Lodge #460 F&AM will conduct Masonic Services at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Allen Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday from the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with his pastor, the Rev. John R. Koons officiating. Burial will be private in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick.
