Obituary

Donald L. Bennett Sr., age 87, of Orangeville, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2021, a patient of the Sunset Ridge Healthcare Center in Bloomsburg. Don was a resident of his home in Scott Twp. for over 30 years and previously resided in Bloomsburg.

He was born on Tuesday, August 29, 1933 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Alfonso and Hazel (Dalious) Bennett. Throughout his younger years, Don attended the Scott Twp. area schools and later graduated from the former Scott Twp. High School, where he is a member of the Hall of Fame for his basketball and soccer achievements. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in May, 1961.

On December 8, 1956, Don married his loving wife, the former Gladys M. Whalen. For over 44 years, he was employed by The Bloomsburg Water Company as the Superintendent until his retirement in 1999. Don was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg. He enjoyed hunting, bass fishing, playing bingo, playing Pennsylvania lottery games and going on bus trips with his wife to Atlantic City.

In addition to his parents, Don was also preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Bennett and Richard Bennett, a sister, Dawn Campbell, and a brother-in-law, Gary Whalen, Sr.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Gladys M. Bennett; a son, Donald L. Bennett, Jr. and wife Brenda of Bloomsburg, two grandchildren; Douglas Bennett and fiancee Katie Downs, Breanna Bennett and husband Curtis Harner, three great grandchildren, Brooks Allen Bennett, Crue Grayson Harner, Carys Ceaton Harner, seven siblings; Shirley Showers of Berwick, Ann wife of Bill Winn, Elmer Bennett, Larry Bennett and wife Janet, Frank Bennett and wife Darlene, Gary Bennett, Debra wife of Sonny Makar, and a sister-in-law, Faye Bennett, all of Bloomsburg.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Streets, Bloomsburg.

Funeral services will begin on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 10:00 am at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge with military honors provided by the combined V.F.W. and American Legion groups. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Bennett family.
