Christina M. (Whelan) Alws, age 69, of Main Twp., Columbia County died on Monday afternoon, January 19, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family and friends, under the care of Columbia Montour Hospice. Christina had been in failing health for several years.
Christina was born on Thursday, May 17, 1945 in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, a daughter of the late Murtagh and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Whelan. She completed her education upon graduation from high school in Ireland.
With her husband of 35 years, Christina owned and operated a family business in Brooklyn, New York. She retired from their Deli in 1997. Upon settlement in Columbia County, Christina became a member of St. Columba Catholic Parish in Bloomsburg.
On October 14, 2003, Christina was preceded in death by her husband, Karl H. Alws, Sr. Also preceding her was a sister: Marie Ryan and a brother: Murtagh Whelan.
Survivors include a daughter: Donna Marie Alws of Mainville; a son: Karl H. Alws, Jr. and wife, Shannon, of Carbondale and three brothers: William Whelan and wife, Carol of Florida, Jack Whelan and wife, Christina, and Raymond Whelan both of Ireland.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening, January 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth St. in Bloomsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin on Friday afternoon, January 23 at 1 p.m, at the St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron and Third Street in Bloomsburg with Monsignor Robert E. Lawrence as celebrant. Graveside committal services will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Alws family.
