Obituary

Charles Robert "Chuck" Wettling, age 95, of Main Township passed away peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Chuck was born on Wednesday, August 10, 1927 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late George and Vesta (Zepp) Wettling of Potter, NY. Chuck attended Oberlin College and earned both a bachelor's and master's Degree in chemistry. For some years he was employed in that field. Later he took up surveying. His work of mapping the sea floor kept him in the lower forty-eight and also took him to Alaska and Yemen.

In October 1969 he married his wife the former Margaret Lee, formerly from Neston, England. About 1978 they moved from Washington, DC to the Bloomsburg area. Together they participated in many outdoor activities. Chuck always liked sports that had a taste of danger, such as rock climbing. He enjoyed spelunking, exploring caves in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. A local favorite was J-4, located near State College. He also enjoyed canoeing and downhill and cross-country skiing. He loved hiking, either alone or with his many friends and his faithful dog, Spreckle, whom he taught to understand full sentences in English.

Chuck and Margaret were also both fond of English Country dancing, as well as Chuck's favorite, Scottish dancing. He also greatly enjoyed international dancing. They taught a dance group in Bloomsburg for many years, introducing local friends to a new activity. Poetry was also very important to Chuck. He had many poetry readings with friends at his house, and he also read poems with the local poetry group. He introduced his friends to Finger Lakes wine and extra dry martinis. Chuck is survived by his wife Margaret.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Streets, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Wettling family.
