Carl T. Johnson, age 94, of West Ninth Street, Bloomsburg, died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 a resident of Emeritus at Bloomsburg since January of 2010.
Carl was born on Tuesday, February 5, 1918 in Northumberland, a son of the late Alfred and Tressie (Hummer) Johnson. He was a member of the 1936 Graduating Class of the former Scott High School. Following his education, Carl enlisted in the United States Army where he served his county faithfully during World War II. Obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, Carl served in the 746th Tank Battalion when bravely landing on the shores of Omaha Beach in France during the Battle of the Bulge. During this battle, he was wounded and later received the distinguished honor of the Purple Heart for being wounded during his time of service. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for his valiant service to his country.
After his honorable discharge from his time of dedicated service, Carl returned home to Columbia County, and until his retirement in 1983 was employed by Magee Carpet Co. for over 30 years as a shearer.
On August 10, 1941, Carl married the former Marian Benscoter whom he recently celebrated over 71 years of marriage. Also surviving is a daughter, Judy A. Pierce and husband, Stephen, of Butler, NJ; and a granddaughter: Lynne Pierce also of Butler, NJ.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, January 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will begin on Monday, January 14 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 2351 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg with Pastor Susan Rogutski, officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow in the New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.
