Betty S. (Savage) Penman, age 97, of Bloomsburg died peacefully on Thursday morning, January 22, 2015 at her son's home in Virginia Beach, Virginia with her son and daughter-in-law at her side.
Betty was born on Wednesday, November 28, 1917 in Espy, a daughter of the late Nevin W. and A. Leona (Lehman) Savage. Throughout her younger years, she attended and later graduated from the Berwick High School in 1935. She expanded her education by graduating from the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1939. She began teaching in Mifflinville and later taught in the Berwick Junior High School from which she retired after 30 years of teaching. Upon her retirement, she did volunteer work in various local agencies and traveled extensively in this country and abroad. She was a member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church for over 50 years, a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, and a life-member of the Bloomsburg Chapter #279 Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her late husband, William Hope Penman, in February of 1977 and also by a daughter Betijane in September of 1965.
Survivors include her son: Rev. David Penman and wife, Gail (Shaffer), of Virginia Beach, VA; grandsons: Rev. Bryan Penman and Matt Fiore of Conshohocken, PA; and Matthew Penman of Hellman, PA; and also by a brother: Nevin Savage of Scottsdale, AZ.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday morning, January 31 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 123 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will also begin on Saturday morning, January 31, at 11 a.m. from the St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bloomsburg with Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Penman family.
