Anna Maertz, age 96, of Bloomsburg previously of East Meadow, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, surrounded by her family, a patient of the Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital. She was a resident of her home in Scott Township for over 17 years.
Anna was born on Saturday, March 23, 1929 in Bavaria, Germany a daughter of the late Michael and Maria (Mehringe) Thumann. She attended school in Germany before immigrating to New York in 1950. On November 12, 1955 Anna married her loving husband, George Werner Maertz who preceded her in death on June 27, 2007. For over 20 years, she was employed by Gelfo, NY as a seamstress until her retirement in 1991. Anna moved to Bloomsburg to be closer to her family after her husband's passing. She was a member of the St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg. Anna was gifted in quilting and knitting, she was an active member of Quilters in Bloom, Berwick YMCA swim classes, and previously St. Luke's Senior Center. Her love of gardening, sewing, cooking, and family was evident to all who loved her.
In addition to her parents and husband, Anna was also preceded in death by two brothers and their wives: Michael and Marianne Thumann, Alois and Dorothy Thumann.
Survivors include her beloved two sons: Gerald "Jerry" Maertz and wife Janice of Bloomsburg, Gary M. Maertz and wife Maryann of Clark, NJ; eight grandchildren: Kristen Fagley and husband Dave of Shamokin, Vicki O'Hara and husband Christopher of Hummelstown, Eric Maertz and wife Katie of Greenville, NC, Santo Maertz of Clark, NJ, Gabrielle Maertz of Manhattan, NY, Noelle Maertz of Orlando, FL, Rossario Maertz of Woodbridge, NJ, Isabelle Maertz of Miami, FL; six great grandchildren: Owen, Liam, Dylan, Danielle, Arthur, and Jonah.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg. Wake Service will be at 7:00 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial Services will begin on Friday, November 7, 2025 at 11:00 am at the St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron Street, Bloomsburg, with Rev. Richard J. Mowery, celebrant. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in the New Rosemont Cemetery, Bloomsburg. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Maertz family.
