Alice H. (Hetrick) Smith, age 83, of Bloomsburg and formerly of State College, died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at home. Alice was a resident of State College for over 40 years.
Alice was born on Nov. 19, 1930, in DuBois, a daughter of the late Cecil T. and Margaret (Schneider) Hetrick. Alice attended and graduated from the DuBois High School in 1948. She continued her education with collegiate studies at the DuBois Undergraduate Center. She later received her Bachelor and two Master's degrees of Education from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1996, Alice retired from her 40 year teaching career as a reading specialist at the Philipsburg-Osceola Middle School.
Throughout the years, Alice was an avid, lifelong reader. She also enjoyed puzzles and other word games. Her knitting and crocheting talents benefited several charities. Playing bridge with friends in State College was another favorite pastime.
Alice was the widow of Matthew H. Smith of Falls Creek. She was also preceded in death by two siblings: Barbara Tauscher and Homer Hetrick.
Survivors include three children: Sonya S. Smith and husband, Paul Miller, of Bloomsburg; Jennifer Ehrlich and husband, David, Dumfries, Va.; and Jeffrey Smith and wife, Dyan, of Arlington, Va.; three granddaughters: Lt. j.g. Heather Ehrlich of San Diego, Calif.; and Grace and Greta Miller of Bloomsburg; and three siblings: Robert D. "Bob" Hetrick of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Cecil T. Hetrick of Beaver; and Shirley Myer of Richmond, Ind.
Services to celebrate Alice's life will be announced at a later date. Alice will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Beechwoods Cemetery in Falls Creek, Jefferson County. Memorial contributions in Alice's name are suggested to the DuBois Public Library, 31 S. Brady St., DuBois, PA 15801 or the Holt Memorial Library, 17 N. Front St., Philipsburg, PA 16866.
