Mervin D. Mason
May 9, 1939 - October 27, 2018
Mervin D. Mason, age 79, of Catawissa, was received in peace and with grace unto our Lord after a stay at Geisinger Hospice at Maria Hall in Danville, PA. Mervin was a resident of Connecticut and Florida prior to living in Columbia County. Mervin was born on Tuesday, May 9, 1939 in Newport, New Hampshire, a son of the late William and Stella (Fowler) Mason. Mervin faithfully served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Navy as a Corpsman at the United States Naval Hospital from 1958-1962. He traveled extensively on the east coast before making his residence in Suffield, CT. Mervin and Linda were married on August 18, 1984, they continued to live in Suffield and both worked as nurses for the Connecticut Department of Corrections in Somers over twenty years. They enjoyed cruises, any beach and hosting parties for family and friends at home. After retiring from the D.O.C., Mervin went to work as a nurse at The Hartford Dispensary for another ten years. Once retired, they moved to their favorite vacation spot of Hattaras, NC and finally settled down into Punta Gorda, FL in 2004. Mervin recently moved to Pennsylvania in July to be closer to his family. Mervin worked hard all of his life, often having more than one job. In spite of his hard work, he always had time for family and friends. This was a priority in his life, something he learned growing up in the small town of Sutton, NH. Mervin still remained close with his childhood friends, Navy buddies and coworkers for the rest of his life. The move to Florida found he and Linda surrounded by new friends to expand their generous host of life-long buddies. His love of family truly came to fruition with the birth of his daughter, Amy; no father could be more loving. The duo was often found on "the boat" cruising on the Connecticut River, listening to music, playing cards or just plain getting lost. Mervin Mason was a special man, someone whom you remember after you met him. He had smiling eyes and the gift of gab, always sharing a story of his travels. He touched the lives of many in his last few years as his health declined, and to all of those who cared for him, you touched his life forever. In addition to his parents, Mervin was also preceded by his wife, Linda (Bishop) Mason in November 2014 and seven siblings: William, Richard, Beth, Dorothy, Marian, Kay and Bertha. Survivors include his daughter, Amy N. Wimpfheimer and husband, Robert, of Catawissa, PA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Saturday November 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Third Congregational Church, 94 Miner Street, Middletown, CT with Rev. Norm Erlendson, officiating. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., is honored to be serving the Mason and Wimpfheimer families. Memorial contributions in Mervin's name are suggested to: Geisinger Hospice at Maria Hall 410 Glenn Avenue Suite #200 Bloomsburg, PA 17815 or Boys Town 14100 Crawford St., Boystown, NB 68010.
